Topic: AN UNRELENTING HYPOCRITE

Anchor Scripture: Matthew 23:23

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have left out the more important matters of the law: judgment, mercy, and faith. You should have done these things, without neglecting the others.”

Welcome and be blessed in Jesus' name, amen. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “I would be a Christian if it weren’t for the Christians.

” This was after he was denied entry to a church because of his Hindu attire. When he asked to worship there, the church elders told him, “There is no place for an unbeliever here.” This situation highlights the double standards in some Christian communities.

The term "hypocrite" comes from the ancient Greek word **HYPOKRITES**, which was also used by the Romans. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a hypocrite is someone who pretends to have virtues or beliefs that they do not actually possess.

In Luke 6:41-42, Jesus gives an example of hypocrisy: “Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you fail to see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.”

There is a story about a woman who was a prostitute and became a regular churchgoer after repenting. Despite her efforts, she felt unwelcome and was often judged by others. In the end, she returned to her previous lifestyle, stating, “I will go back to where I am more accepted.”

In John 8:1-11, we learn about Mary Magdalene, who was caught in adultery. The teachers of the law wanted to punish her, but Jesus said that anyone without sin could cast the first stone.

Lesson for Today:

God wants us to look at our own lives before judging others. We should not be self-righteous; it is only through Jesus that we can be forgiven. The word "hypocrite" literally means “actor.” In ancient Greece, actors in plays were called "HYPOCRITES." When we don’t act according to our beliefs, we become hypocrites too.

REFLECTION:

Let’s revisit this devotion and ask God for forgiveness for judging others without examining ourselves. May God help us in Jesus' name, amen.

PRAYERS:

Dear Father, thank You for life, for Your love and mercy. Please teach us to accept others' faults without being judgmental, in Jesus' name, amen.
