Topic: When Life feels unfair. Trusting God through the storm

Anchor Scripture: 1 Peter 5:7 - "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

Welcome, and may you be blessed in Jesus' name. Amen. A few weeks ago, I watched a news report on a local TV station about a devastating flood. On that fateful day, a woman affected by the disaster shared that there were no signs that catastrophe was imminent. The rain began gradually in the late afternoon and continued into the evening, becoming heavier as the night wore on. She and her family went to bed early, like many others.

It was the shouts of neighbors that woke her up. At first, she was confused, only hearing the steady sound of rain on the roof. As people screamed, her husband woke up too, and they rushed outside to find water everywhere, even in their living room. By the time they stepped outside, a massive flood was sweeping through, and people were desperately trying to escape.

In their confusion, they remembered that their children were still inside. She paused for a moment, breathing heavily, then recounted, "My husband rushed inside to bring out our children while the water was already waist-deep. The torrent became increasingly overwhelming, and I was swaying from side to side, shouting my husband's name."

“Suddenly, the front of our house collapsed. It felt like a nightmare. I was swept away by the rushing water, clinging to anything I could grab. At one point, I went under, but eventually, someone pulled me back to the surface.”

Tragically, she learned that her husband and two children did not survive; they drowned. Overwhelmed with grief, she cried out to God, asking, "Why? Why?"

After watching that news report, I was deeply disturbed. Sometimes, we face unexplainable tragedies, especially when it comes to natural disasters. Investigations revealed that the flood was caused by a dam in the area breaking and releasing a massive amount of water, not merely the rain. This led to the tragic loss of many lives.

However, our anchor scripture reminds us that God cares for us. He knows our pain, health challenges, struggles in our careers, relationships, unruly children, unfaithful friends, and more. He is with us every step of the way and promises to lead us to a place of glory (Jeremiah 29:11). Even when it feels like the enemy is winning, shame and reproach are not our final destination.

I will conclude with Hebrews 4:16, urging us to come boldly to the throne of grace to obtain mercy and find grace to help in our times of need. May the Lord grant us understanding in Jesus' name. Amen.

Reflection: Let us meditate on this devotion today and continually cast our burdens on Him, for He alone knows how to lead us out of every challenge.

Prayers: Lord Jesus, thank You for speaking to us today. May all glory be Yours in Jesus' name. Amen.
