WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT TELLING YOUR SECRET TO OTHERS,?
We’ve all heard the saying, "Never tell a person everything; you may be educating an enemy." But there is a deeper, more dangerous level to this: Never tell a person everything about yourself, because you may be updating an enemy.
In this Christian Treasure Devotion, we explore how an untamed tongue and a lack of discernment can turn your private struggles into your enemy’s ammunition.
The Anchor Scripture
"Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive. The venom of asps is under their lips." — Romans 3:13 (ESV)
A TRUE STORY: THE APPRENTICE AND THE OPEN DOOR
Several years ago, a family was thriving. The husband opened a skill acquisition center, and among his apprentices was a university graduate learning "Video Shooting and Editing "Because the business was booming, the man and the apprentice spent a lot of time together.
Naturally, rumors began to circulate about an affair. When these whispers reached the wife, she dismissed them. Why? Because she had made a friend of the apprentice. The young lady had visited their home, shared meals, and even introduced the wife to her "fiancé."
~The Fatal Mistake:
Feeling a sense of sisterhood, the wife took the apprentice into her confidence. She laid bare the intimate challenges of her marriage—what her husband complained about, their sexual struggles, and his preferences in dress and character.
~The Poisonous Payoff:
Unknown to the wife the affair was real. By sharing her heart, the wife was updating her enemy. Every time the wife complained about a flaw the husband disliked, the apprentice would go behind her back and "improve" in that exact area. She used the wife’s own words to become the wife’s replacement.
Eventually, the marriage collapsed. The husband abandoned his family and married the apprentice.
~Decoding the Viper’s Strategy
1. The Deceit of Malicious Speech (Romans 3:13)
The Bible describes the throat of the wicked as an "open grave." This means that what they say leads to death. Often, this speech is disguised as sympathy or "just wanting to help." Like a viper, the venom isn’t visible on the outside; it sits under the lips, waiting for the right moment to strike.
2. The Trap of the Spider’s Web (Isaiah 59:5)
The Bible compares the plots of the wicked to a spider’s web. A web is designed to ensnare. When you reveal too much to someone without discernment, you are walking straight into a web that will eventually tighten and suffocate your peace.
3. The Unchecked Fire (James 3:5-6)
An untamed tongue is a "world of fire." It can set a whole forest ablaze. If you cannot check your own tongue, you cannot expect others to keep your secrets. Knowing when to speak and when to keep silent is the difference between a protected home and a destroyed one.
HOW TO ACQUIRE WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING?
In Proverbs 4:7, we are told that wisdom is the principal thing, but in all our getting, we must get understanding. Here is how we apply this to our relationships:
Discernment via the Holy Spirit: Some secrets remain hidden from us because we lack the spiritual maturity to keep them. If God can’t trust you with a secret, He may not reveal the "red flags" about the people around you.
Investigate, Don't Ignore: When you hear a report or feel an inner nudge (a check in your spirit), do not brush it aside. Pray for clarity and keep your eyes open.
Selective Confidants: Not everyone who listens to your problems wants to help you solve them. Some are just gathering data to use against you later
Intimacy with God: True wisdom comes from being so intimate with the Holy Spirit that He warns you before you open your mouth to the wrong person.
CONCLUSION: GET WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING FROM THE WORDS OF GOD.
Stop giving "status updates" to people who haven't earned a place in your inner circle. Your vulnerability is a gift you are giving to your enemy.
PRAYERS: Dear LORD, thank you for your words to me today. Please teach me how to set a door on my mouth.. Give me spiritual wisdom and understanding in taking everyday decisions amen.
