Ruth Elton, Nigeria's oldest missionary, died at the age of 91 in Ilesa, Osun State.
In a statement on Sunday, Governor Adeleke commended Elton for her lifelong dedication and contributions to humanity. She was the daughter of Sydney Grandville Elton, a key figure in Nigeria’s Pentecostal revival movement.
Ruth Elton arrived in Nigeria alongside her father in 1937, devoting her life to sharing the gospel and enhancing healthcare in local communities. Demonstrating her love for Nigeria and its people, she renounced her British citizenship to become a Nigerian citizen.
Elton was widely honored for her extended service in the mission field. Governor Adeleke remarked, “Since 1937, Ruth has committed herself to the Nigerian people with exceptional dedication, not only in evangelism but also in improving health and hygiene in various communities.” Her efforts contributed to a decrease in child mortality rates in Ebira land.
Announcing her passing, Governor Adeleke emphasized that her legacy would motivate future generations. He stated, “Her departure is a significant loss for us in Osun, but we can find solace in the enduring impact she made on society.”
He offered prayers for her soul and encouraged the community to carry on her vital work in faith, service, and development.
