11 Tips for Delivering a Powerful Speech
Not long ago, I attended a three-day seminar with several international guest speakers. On the second day, one speaker made a significant mistake. He criticized another speaker, an online influencer, by saying negative things about them, claiming they lacked physical offices and were living a "fake" life. This created an awkward situation for everyone, especially for the influencer who was present.
The next day, the first speaker attempted to rectify this by praising online businesses and condemning those who disrespect them. However, the damage was already done.
To help prevent mistakes like these in public speaking, here are eleven tips for delivering a powerful speech without going off-track:
1. Research Your Host**: Understand the organization or group you’re speaking to. This knowledge will help you connect better with your audience.
2. Know Your Terminology : Make sure you are familiar with the terms related to your topic. Avoid using confusing words to ensure clarity.
3. Consider Your Audience: Start with a relatable story to engage your listeners, but choose your story carefully to avoid offending anyone.
4. Use Notes: It’s better to have notes than to rely solely on memory :.As the Chinese Proverbs say (“ The faintest ink is better than the Strongest memory” )They will help keep you organized and focused.
5. Know Other Speakers* Be aware of who else is speaking and show respect for their expertise to avoid appearing arrogant.
6.Avoid Confusing Language* Use simple, clear language so everyone understands your message without difficulty.
7. Be Relatable* Connect with your audience by sharing experiences. Check in with them by asking if they’re following along.
8. Skip Complex Quotes : Don’t start with a quote you’re not sure about. It’s better to speak from personal experience.
9. Own Up to Mistakes* :If you mess up or say something that doesn’t sit right, apologize on the spot.
10. Stick to Your Time Limit : Respect the time given to you and the other speakers. Don’t take too long.
11. Dress Appropriately: Wear suitable clothing for the occasion to be taken seriously. Make sure you look polished and feel comfortable.
I hope you find these tips useful!
