Everyday Christian living isn’t always about massive crusades or grand gestures; often, it is the quiet, intentional encouragement we offer to a neighbor, a classmate, or a stranger that changes a life forever. The Unexpected Lifesaver: A Devotional Reading

One of the most moving stories illustrating the power of kindness comes from the late Ilene Wright.

Several years ago in New Orleans, a minister was standing in line at a convenience store to buy a few items. He noticed the man in front of him did not have enough money to pay for his groceries. Standing beside the man were his wife and small child, and the entire family looked deeply distressed.

Guided by the Holy Spirit, the preacher gently tapped the man on the shoulder and whispered:

"You don't need to turn around, but please accept this money. Jesus loves you."

The man took the money, paid for the items, and left without looking back.

Nine years later, that same preacher was invited as a guest speaker at a church in New Orleans. After the service, a man walked up to him with tears in his eyes and said, "Thank you for saving my life and my family's lives years ago."

The preacher looked confused, but the man explained:

"Years ago, my wife, my child, and I were completely destitute. We had lost all hope and agreed to a tragic suicide pact. But first, we drove to a store to get milk and food for our child. When I couldn't afford the items, a man tapped my shoulder, gave me money, and told me, 'Jesus loves you.'

When we reached the spot chosen for the pact, we wept uncontrollably. Because of that gesture, we couldn't go through with it. Driving home, we passed a little church with a sign that read 'Jesus Loves You.'

The next Sunday, we attended that church, surrendered our lives to Christ, and were saved."

The man recognized the preacher immediately by his distinct South African accent. Three lives were spared, and an entire family was brought to Christ—all because one man obeyed a simple prompt to show kindness.

During my third year at university, a male classmate in my project group—who worked part-time and was older than most of us—suddenly lost his joy. He stopped dressing neatly and appeared withdrawn.

One morning, arriving early to class, I paid him an honest compliment on his appearance and mentioned that people in class truly admired his personality. He was visibly moved.

He confided that he was recovering from a painful breakup where his ex-fiancée had said terrible things to him, leaving him feeling completely uncared for.

That simple, encouraging conversation renewed his self-worth. From that day on, his bright spirit and confidence returned.

Why is kindness so rare today?

~Overwhelming Busyness: Our packed schedules often blind us to the quiet suffering around us.

~Distrust and Fear: In a world rife with betrayal, assault, and exploitation, people build walls to protect themselves.

~Social Media Exploitation: Too often, people monetize others' pain for "content creation" rather than offering genuine help.

Yet, as believers, we are called to be different. We are called to break through the noise with selfless love.

Practical Application: How to Let Your Light Shine

1.Be a Reason Someone Chooses to Live: You never know who is secretly battling depression or suicidal thoughts. A warm smile or a kind word can break the darkness.

Offer Honest Compliments: Never withhold a good word when it is in your power to speak it. An intentional compliment can lift a heavy heart.

~Look Beyond Your Own Struggles: It is easy to say, "I'm going through too much to help others." But reaching out to comfort someone else often brings healing to your own soul.

~Reach Out Without Agenda: Check on old friends or acquaintances. Don't restrict your networking only to business or career advancements—net-work for the Kingdom.

3.Make me an instrument of Your peace and a solution to someone’s pain. Never let my actions or silence be the reason someone loses hope.

4.Use my life, my words, and my resources to be a generational blessing and a light in the darkness.
