Exciting discoveries are unfolding in Abu Dhabi as archaeologists have uncovered an incredible 7th or 8th-century Christian cross imprinted on a plaque on Sir Bani Yas Island! This remarkable find is part of the emirate's vibrant quest to explore and celebrate its rich historical tapestry.
The design of the cross closely resembles artifacts found in Iraq and Kuwait, linking it back to the ancient Church of the East, a fascinating connection to the region’s deep-rooted past.
This discovery marks a thrilling milestone, being the first major excavation in over thirty years since the groundbreaking find of a Christian monastery dating from the same era on the island.
His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi, emphasized that this ancient cross epitomizes the UAE’s enduring principles of coexistence and cultural openness.
He remarked on the exciting ongoing discoveries at Sir Bani Yas Island, which underscore the region’s wealth of cultural heritage and the commitment to its preservation and understanding
Since 1992, the site has been recognized as a tranquil retreat for senior monks seeking contemplation, but now archaeologists are delving deeper into nearby courtyard houses that may have housed these early Christian figures.
