CHRISTIAN TREASURES DEVOTION
SCRIPTURAL REFERENCE: Romans 8:28 (NKJV)
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”*
Be richly blessed as you read. Amen.
Today's devotion emphasizes that whatever has happened, is happening, or will happen will eventually work to your advantage. Often, we face trials and afflictions in life, leading us to question whether these trials are purely the work of enemies or why God allows His children to experience these problems. Let's explore this through some stories.
In one account, a widowed mother of an only child found herself in despair when her son, alongside two other boys, was arrested on allegations of attempted rape. He was preparing to take his final high school exams when this incident occurred. Although he knew nothing about the event, it was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The other two boys were known for causing trouble, including theft and harassing young girls, and the community was eager to see them face consequences.
The mother reached out to her pastor for prayers, hoping for a resolution, but the victim's family was intent on teaching the boys a lesson. Despite her son's innocence and his attempts to explain what happened, the authorities dismissed his claims. In their small riverine community, the three boys were transferred to a larger facility in the capital city for their Trial
The widow cried out in desperation, “Oh God, how could You fail me? How could you do this to me?” She feared that her son, just sixteen, might miss his exams or worse, become an ex-convict. The pastor did everything he could, even arranging for a lawyer to defend her child, but it seemed every step taken was met with resistance. Ultimately, the pastor encouraged her to put everything in God's hands, reminding her of today’s anchor scripture regarding God’s purpose.
Two weeks later, it was time for the examination. The students were transported in a small boat to a neighboring town that had a larger school. Unfortunately, the boat capsized due to heavy rain and strong tides from the previous night. All the students on board drowned. In her sorrow, she realized the gravity of her situation—had her son been there, he would have likely been among the victims. This tragic event made her understand her pastor's words: despite the loss, God had preserved her son for a reason, demonstrating that all things work together for good for those called according to His purpose.
Just two days after the accident, the pastor informed her that her son had been released. All evidence pointed to his innocence; he was merely in the wrong place when the girl's cry led to his arrest.
In another story, a born-again sister was desperate to marry, feeling that she was running out of time as her friends settled down. She met a man who expressed interest in her. Instead of seeking God's guidance and doing her due diligence, she hurriedly planned the wedding, even though he was not a Christian. Despite her reservations, she financed the wedding, believing she could support him financially since she earned more. Her mother voiced concerns about the man's attitude, but she dismissed them.
On the wedding day, the man failed to show up, revealing that he had other plans with another woman. Heartbroken and humiliated, she cried out in despair, exclaiming that she would rather die than face such shame. Just three months later, she learned the man had a terminal illness he had hidden from her. She understood that had they married, she would have been married only briefly before facing the pain of losing him.
Often, we believe the devil controls our lives, but as children of God, He is always in control if we allow Him and walk according to His purpose. When we fail to achieve our goals or face disappointments, we may blame others without recognizing that God can intervene to protect us from making costly mistakes, sometimes even using adversities to fulfill His divine purpose.
ASSIGNMENT: Are you walking according to God's purpose? Let's reflect on our relationship with God today. May the Lord help us in Jesus' name, amen.
Let's Pray: Dear Father, thank you for your words to us today. Be glorified in Jesus' name amen.
