Mount Athos, commonly known as the “Holy Mountain,” is one of the most distinctive and enigmatic locations in the world. Located in northern Greece, this imposing peninsula is home to the largest monastic community globally, consisting of 20 monasteries and thousands of monks dedicated to prayer, worship, and spiritual practices.

However, what truly sets Mount Athos apart is its ancient regulation: entry is strictly forbidden for women and female animals

Mount Athos is a unique site where only men are permitted. The presence of women and female animals is prohibited.

There are several reasons for this restriction at the world’s largest monastic community:

1. To Minimize Distractions: This prohibition allows monks to focus without the temptations that could arise from the presence of women and female animals.

2. The Legend: According to a tale, the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist were traveling to Cyprus when a storm diverted them to Mount Athos. Mary fell in love with the mountain’s beauty and expressed a desire to stay.
